Servicing is planned maintenance.

A service follows the appliance manufacturer’s maintenance requirements. Keep previous records and check your warranty terms. Tell the engineer about any changes you have noticed, even if the boiler is still working.

A repair starts with a fault.

If heating or hot water is not working, the boiler displays a fault code or the problem keeps returning, say so when booking. A fault-finding visit may need different time or parts from a routine service.

Prepare the useful details.

Make a note of the boiler make and model, any code on the display, when the issue started and whether heating, hot water or both are affected. Do not remove the casing or attempt gas work yourself.

Check registration for gas work.

Use the Gas Safe Register to check the engineer’s current registration and relevant qualifications.
